Think of restaurants in Santiago de Compostela, does ?good cooking? not spring to mind? Galicia is synonymous with barnacle, scallop, octopus ?a la gallega?, pie, Santiago cake?
Cuisine in the Santiago de Compostela restaurants is varied. You can go for tapas, or to snack bars where you can try some of the typical delicacies from Galicia like ?pimientos padrón? (small green spicy peppers) or xoubiñas (small sardines) or you can book a table in one of the charming little restaurants, like ODezasies, or a romantic restaurant like A Curtidoria. A great option is to pop into a tavern and try a great, but of course cheap, national wine.
Galicia is sea and coast, so the menus are full of produce from the sea. Turbot, grouper, sea bass, sea bream, monkfish?are just some of the fish you can find in the Galician kitchens, whether grilled, baked or in a great Galician fish stew. Deserving its own mention is octopus as even though it can be eaten all over Spain, here in Galicia it just tastes different.
But the sea doesn?t take anything away from the taste of good meat, so you should also try the famous Galician beef. If you like pork then in the last few years we have been trying to recover the local variety, known as Porco Celta, highly appreciated for the quality of its meat and fat.
Of course, you can?t leave Galicia without trying out our seafood: crayfish, prawns, razor clams, scallops, cockles, spider crabs, lobsters, crabs, barnacles, etc. A seafood platter in Santiago de Compostela, in Noia, Finisterre or Oviedo is a must.
And for pudding you must try some Santiago cake, a delicacy for the sweetest teeth.
And why not wash it all down with a ribeiro, an albariño a mencía da Ribeira Sacra, a Monterrei or a Godello de Ourense. In Galicia we have seven wines with designation of origin; it is a very fertile land!
If you prefer to go out for some wine and tapes you can do this too. In Santiago de Compostela, for four years now, they have held a tapas competition between the cities restaurateurs; Santiago (é) Tapas.
