The university of Santiago de Compostela is among the oldest and the most important univesities of Spain. The university of Santiago de Compostela is more than 500 years old. It offers 70 different degrees and 50 Ph.D. At the beginnig, there were only about 500 students. In the last years they reach the figure of 34.000 and, at their disposal, there are modern facilities and specialized libraries. The main library contains 1.000.000 copies, rarities among them.
Some religious original buildings were transformed to university facilities. The first university building was in the 14th century in the place where nowadays is the faculty of History and Geography, at Mazarelos Square.
The library inside is very old and beautiful, displaying many old books, among others singularities, ?The Hour?s book- El libro de la horas?, the oldest book in Galicia. It was in 1055 written.
The university is, besides the regional government and the tourist, the most important economic sector in the city. |
