The market is here from eighteen eighty-five. Some centuries before there was a palace, the palace of Counts of Altamira which no longer exists. The counts of Altamira were famous in Compostela because they were very rich and they donated a lot of money to church and they were patrons of many artists in the city. But they got involved in class struggles with the church and that was their end. But they left many monuments before their power came to an end.
Men and women from the valleys which surround Compostela arrive here at the market very early with their products. It is a traditional market and it is entirely based on talking and haggling. You can find here fresh products like fishes, pork products, vegetables, fruts, clothes.
