The name Santiago de Compostela has a history

The name Santiago de Compostela consists of four words. Santiago is the Galician evolution of Santum Iacobus, which means Saint Jacob in English. This word is easy. But the second word is more complex: some experts and philologists say that the word comes from lathin Campus stellae which means field of stars. This field of stars is closely related to the legend of the origin of the city. It says that there was a hermit who saw some lights and signs in the night sky in the year 813. His name was Paio or Pelayo in Spanish. So he followed those signs and he found out the tomb of the apostle and his disciples.
He told a Visigoth bishop called Teodomiro of Iria Flavia (by the way, Iria Flavia is nowadays Padron. It is in the coast, 20 km from Santiago). That bishop was the person in charge of the remains of Santiago and his disciples from that moment onwards. Bishop Teodomiro informed the king of Galicia and Asturias, Alfonso II, who came here and he ordered to build the first chapel in order to guard the tomb of the apostle. He founded the monastery of Antealtares as well. Afterwards, he informed the Pope, Leon III who declared that the remains were true but he never came to Santiago. It is said that Alfonso II sent emperor Charlemagne a bone, a shoulder blade from the apostle as a relic.
