The typical equipment we find in almost all representations of the apostle and the pilgrims:

A hat with a flap protects against rain and sun. At the hat is attached a 'vieira' (scallop). A pilgrim's stick helps to walk and also, still today, against annoying dogs. It is made of wood and mostly reinforced with metal. A gourd spends the necessary water. Although there are plenty of fountains you should carry always water with you, above all when it´s hot. A bag is used for packing important things in and a coat of pilgrim protect against the cold and insects. A shell is carried with both. The "vieira" has become a symbol of the pilgrims because a long time ago it replaced the cup to drink water
from the fountains.
